Treating severe fibroids with uterus-sparing surgery

Much has been written about fibroids and treatments for the condition in the media recently. Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the womb and are very common, in fact around two in five women in the UK suffer from the problem. Some women present fibroids with heavy periods and bleeding but many women do not ever get any symptoms, however, they can affect a person’s chance of conceiving.

The issue of uterus-sparing treatments and surgery has become increasingly relevant with more women putting off child-bearing to their late thirties or early forties – when fibroids are more common and symptomatic.  As such, gynaecologists will face more demands from women for this type of surgery and with developments in assisted reproductive technology, the argument to support a myomectomy becomes increasingly powerful.

A myomectomy is an operation to remove fibroids, leaving the womb in place. It may be done through a cut in the tummy, or sometimes it may be possible to use keyhole surgery.
