The journey to parenthood is a unique experience for everyone, and sometimes it takes a turn towards a less-known miscarriage risk factor: thrombotic factors. In today’s blog this blog, we explore how these factors can impact pregnancies and how immunology offers a solution.

Inherited thrombotic risk factors are genetic and can increase a person's tendency to develop blood clots that can have serious implications for fertility treatments.

Increased risk of pregnancy complications may arise due to the increased risk of blood clots during pregnancy, that may block blood supply to the placenta, potentially leading to stillbirths, miscarriages, or pre-eclampsia. Managing thrombophilia is vital for a successful pregnancy.

Testing needs to be done to assess the risks and to personalise treatment accordingly. Read more about consistency of care and personalised treatment in our previous blog.

Treatment People with thrombophilia are given medications to avoid blood clots forming. A healthy diet, exercise and not smoking can reduce the risk of blood clots.

Dr George Ndukwe, our IVF consultant and immunology expert, explored the power of immunology in preventing miscarriages and failed embryo transfers. Dr Ndukwe shared in his blogs facts about:

- Natural Killer Cells, what are they, when they can become a problem, and immunology solution;

- Breaking the miscarriage code: Cytokines. What is hormonal balance, why the intracellualr cytokines' ratios are important, as well as treatment strategies;

- Autoimmune factors, the key to a successful pregnancy? What autoimmune factors are how they can increase the likelihood of successful pregnancies?
