Introduction
Is sperm freezing right for me?
There are many social and medical reasons why you might want to freeze your sperm and preserve your fertility for the future, from having a temporary backup to having cancer treatment. Our fertility specialists will talk to you about your fertility health in-depth, so you can make an informed decision about whether sperm freezing is the best option for you.
Who’s it for
You might want to freeze your sperm if…
- You’re considering cancer treatment
Or any other treatment that might cause permanent loss of sperm production
- You want a backup for fertility treatment
Because you find it difficult to produce a sample or if you’ll be away when your partner’s due to have treatment
- You want to have a sex change or vasectomy
And preserve your fertility before starting hormone therapy or surgery - You’re undergoing surgical sperm retrieval
And your samples will be frozen for the future
Statistics at Harley Street
Sperm freezing is a safe and effective option to preserve your fertility. Survival rates for frozen sperm are around 85%. However, there are many sperm in a sample, and a small decrease does not affect clinical outcomes significantly.
For IUI treatments, research shows pregnancy rates using frozen sperm are slightly lower than using fresh sperm samples (16% vs. 21%).
For IVF or ICSI, though, there is no difference between fresh and frozen sperm success rates.
Even long-term storage is unlikely to have an impact on outcomes. One study found nearly equivalent live birth rates for women undergoing artificial insemination with donor sperm frozen for up to 15 years.
